CAPE TOWN, South Africa (UPI) — A supreme court judge sentenced British journalist David Rabkin and politicalscience lecturer Jeremy Cronin to 10 years and seven years imprisonment, respectively, for furthering the aims of banned organizations.Rabkin’s wife, Susan, who is eight months pregnant, was sentenced to 12 months in jail,of which 11 months were conditionally suspended.David Rabkin and Cronin gave the clenched-fist black power salute to the crowd in the courtroom gallery after sentence by Judge Marius Diemont.Both had pleaded guilty to charges under the terrorism and internal security act of promoting the aims of the African National Congress andyok atthe South African Communist party, which are banned organizations. The court found them guilty of publishing ANC and SACP leaflets calling for the overthrow of law and order in the country.Mrs. Rabkin was found guilty of distributing the pamphlets.Judge Diemont said she would leave the country as soon as she had served her one month in prison. “You are anunwelcome visitor in this country,” he told her.After their conviction Monday David Rabkin and Cronin read unsworn statements to the court saying they believed the ANC was the only South African black organization that could help the African majority and their actions were motivated by a “patriotic” desire for an undivided and peaceful nation.
