Neighbors Rescued Two From MonoxideRoxbury Man Fatally Hurt In Car CrashA Roxbury man, Jerry William Brownell, 23, was injured fatally Sunday afternoon when his car went out of control on the Grand Gorge-Prattsville highway and overturned down a small embankment after hitting a stump. A passenger, Gilbert DuMond, 18, also of Roxbury, was injured.Sgt. Edward J. Juba of th^ Margaretville state police substation said the Brownell car was traveling east on route 23 toward Prattsville. About two miles out of Grand Gorge the car went out of control on the right shoulder, skidded across the highway and hit the stump. Brownell wasthrown from the vehicle.The injured men were taken by ambulance to the Stamford hospital, where Brownell died about 7:15 p. m. His injuries included a cerebral concussion and a fractured skull. DuMond was reported in good condition with cuts and bruises.The dead man was in Army service from June 1954 until June 1959, including more than a year in Germany. Before entering service he had attended Grand Gorge central school. Before his death he was employed by Robert Munro of Roxbury as a painter.A native of Grand Gorge, Brownell was the son of Edward and Madeline Snyder Brownell. He was born Oct. 20, 1937. The couple, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Baetz, both 65,Cub Scout Baseball To Start June 29Managers of six Cub Scout baseball teams met Tuesday evening at Margaretville central school to reorganize the league which will compete for the Stanley Bussy trophy this summer. The sason will open June 29.Competing this year again are Margaretville, Arkville, Andes, Bovina and Fleischmanns. Roxbury is returning to the league this year after intra-pack play last year. The Margaretville and Arkville teams will be composed of members of Pack 80.Managers are John Robson of Bovina, who was also reelected league chairman, John Roucek of Margaretville, Maurice Davis of Arkville, Dave Andrews of Andes, Sheridan Kelly (acting) of Fleischmanns and William Poole of Roxbury.The schedule calls for home-and-home games between all teams. Arkville ham games will be played at the Margaretville field. Games between Bovine and Roxbury will be played at Margaretville and one Fleischmanns-Bovina game will be played at Andes. The season will close on July 31 when the six teams will engage in a simultaneous tripleheader at the Margaretville school grounds. Burch Me-Morran, state superintendent of public works announced that scaled bids on 3Q highway and four J Baetz, who is a retired machinist, canal projects totaling an esti-was taken to Benedictine hospital for treatment and revival by oxygen.Mrs. Dorothea Munch, who lives at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amasa Herdman, in Fox Hollow, answered the telephone about 6 p. m. and heard Mr. Baetz say that his wife had fainted and was lying on the kitchen floor. Mrs. Munch and her father hurried the quarter mile to the Baetz home.They found Mr. Baetz sitting in the living room. He told them he didn't feel well, and suddenly passed out. Dr. J. G. McKeon was called and suspected Mrs. Baetz had suffered a stroke. He arrived at the home a few minutes later, however, and found Mr. Baetz unconscious too.Mr. Munch said that a ham was burning in the oven, leading to suspicion of paint fumes, burning fumes or food poisoning. Dr. McKeon directed the couple's removal to Kingston by Gormley’s ambulance.Meanwhile Mrs. Munch's daughter had notified Fire Chief Sidney Ford of Shandaken. Mr. Ford arrived at the Baetz home and during his investigation discovered that the ignition was turned on in a car parked in the garage below the living room and kitchen. The motor had stalled, but not before the house became filled with monoxide fumes.Mrs. Munch and her father reported that they had felt the monoxide slightly, but weren’t in it long enough to become affected.
