Some 1,500 persons attended.Dr. McHenry has headed the school since 1961 and has been building the new 2,000-acre campus, modeled after the cluster of colleges at Oxford University.“This marks the formal beginning,” Dr. McHenry said. “Today is the day when we can tell the public that we are open and operating and that we have an enterprise that is earmarked for a modest successs.”Lord Keith Anderson Hope Murray, a renowned British educator, delivered the mainJ 3atlili LAA.He reminded freedom-seeking studenst of today of an ealrier scholar, Edmund Burke, who said that liberty must be limited in order for it to be possessed.Among recipients of honorary degrees at the ceremonies were James Heston, associate editor of t he New York Times ; Samuel Finley Brown Morse, Cali-f o r n i a conservationist; David Packard, co-founder of the Hewlett-Packard Co., and Max Thelen, veteran San Francisco attorney.The new university campus accepted its first students last fall and currently has a student body of about 650.
