Was Out of Reach of Water Supplyand Went up in Smoke YesterdayThe people of Paw Paw were justly proud of their handsome and commodious briok school house, erected some twelve years ago at an expense of 812,-000 to take the place of the frame building which had been consumed some two years previous.Tuesday morning, while most of the people of the town were at breakfast, they were startled by the alarm of fire, and their attention was directed to the school building, from which were pouring flames and smoke. In an incredibly short time the fine structure was reduced ter an unsightly ruin, the fire company being unable to render efficient assistance, as the bdildiug could not be reached by hose from the nearest hydrant. The water mains stop short fully forty rods from the scene of ; destruction, and thehose available was insufficient to carry a stream of water j to the building. IThere was talk of laying pipes last ! fall to the school house, bat between the city authorities and the officers of the school district the matter was allowed to rest for awhile, with this disastrous result. The exact cause of the fire is not definitely known. The janitor started up the furnaces early in the morning, and left everything apparently safe when he departed for his breakfast. In less than an hour the fire was beyond oontroL The building we understand, says the Telegraph, was insured for 16,000.
