1979: Mountbatten killed by IRA

“Lord Louis Mountbatten, a heroic World War II commander and ‘Uncle Dickie’ to Britain’s royal family, was killed Monday in an explosion that demolished his yacht off the coast of Ireland. IRA terrorists asserted responsibility for the ‘execution’ and police said the blast apparently was caused by a time bomb,” explained an article in The Post-Standard on August 28, 1979. North Korea halts nuclear disabling

North Korea has announced that it has stopped dismantling its nuclear facilities over charges that the U.S. has not removed it from a list of state-sponsored terrorism. Taking the Asian nation off the list was a promised response to the end of the North Korean nuclear program, but the U.S. is waiting until an independent verification system can be set in place. North Korea, by contrast, refuses to allow America to have unrestricted access at any time to their nuclear facilities. That sticking point has led both nations to declare that the other has not fulfilled its obligation. Read Full Story

Like the attack on the Maine and the Battle of the Alamo before it, the attack on Pearl Harbor became the rallying point for American soldiers in every theatre of combat during World War II.

Although America did not enter World War II until after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the events leading up to the attack showed a growing desire for US entry into the growing conflict.
