1961: Author Ernest Hemingway dies

American novelist Ernest Hemingway committed suicide at his home in Ketchum, Idaho today. The Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner died from a gunshot to the head. Despite the widespread belief that his death was a suicide, his wife told authorities that the shooting must have been accidental, and the gun simply went off as Hemingway was cleaning it.
