Newspaper Obituaries

A newspaper obituary search should use names and keywords appropriate for the time period. For example, many historical newspapers refer to married women by their husband's name, Mrs. John Smith, and in some papers, obituaries may instead be called death notices or funeral announcements.

Obituary Search Tips

  • Use names, dates and locations to narrow your search
  • Use the between years search if you don't have an exact date
  • Remember to search the day of and days after an event occurred, as the articles may appear later
  • Married women were often referred to as "Mrs. John Smith" in older newspapers
  • Use these related keywords if you're having trouble: death notice, funeral, eulogy, burial, deceased, cremation, mortuary, etc.
